The leading book on vocal technique worldwide. As the name suggests, Complete Vocal Technique, is a book that covers and defines the entire subject of voice technique.World-renowned vocal coach, Cathrine Sadolin, removes the veil to reveal new concepts on modern vocal approach. Through extensive research, Cathrine has developed an entirely new approach to voice technique that, by applying different vocal modes will allow a singer to sing in any style and apply any combination of vocal inflections, without losing their voice. She is in great demand for her emergency first aid vocal services, specifically for touring and recording musician’s, helping artists to recover their voice in a minimal amount of time. Cathrine is known throughout Europe as both a classical and rock singer. She has recorded several albums, including one of Spanish classical songs and the New Age CD, Airdance, which was released in 16 countries. She was the singer and composer of the heavy rock CD, Ancient Fire, and her latest release is the CD, Today, which
This 250 + page book is one of the most comprehensive vocal methods I have reviewed in the last few years. Cathrine has taken her extensive research and created a unique approach to vocal instruction. There is basically no vocal stone left unturned, covering concepts from simple breath technique, vocal color, vocal effects, vocal problems, and emergency first aid for singers. Every chapter explains her concepts in full easy to understand detail with an abundance of illustrations.
She presents new answers to age old questions, such as, solving unintentional vocal breaks, opening the voice, utilizing correct breath technique, adjusting the volume, and changing vocal modes ( a new unique concept developed by Cathrine herself).
Her explanation of what she calls, vocal modes is very interesting. A vocal mode is basically the vocal approach and physical set-up that should be adopted for different styles, from basic pop singing to hard screaming heavy metal. She believes, (and so do I) that all vocal styles (from country, pop, opera, jazz, rock, etc:), colors (nasal, chest tones, head tones, etc:) , and effects (breathiness, growl, rattle, screams, etc:), should be effortless and painless to create, and can be done correctly through the correct application of the appropriate vocal mode.
Her four basic vocal modes (Neutral, Curbing, Overdrive, and Belting) help to categorize the basic tonal shape that you wish to create, all by changing the basic vocal shape by visualization and sensation. The book presents a very descriptive guide for using the modes, thus changing pitch and color, vowels, mode transitions, and applying vocal effects.
Other useful concepts presented in the book are microphone technique, studio and live techniques, improvisation and phrasing, and interpretation and performance, all which are based upon Cathrine’s experiences as a touring and recording musician. There are many useful tips on this subject that you won’t find in any other vocal method book.
Accompanying the book is an instructional CD that contains hundreds of vocal examples to walk you through the system and explain the various modes and vocal exercises presented in the book.
Singing is not that difficult and everybody can learn to sing. In Complete Vocal Technique the singing techniques are divided into four main subjects, listed below. By combining elements of these four subjects you can produce precisely the sound you want. You will also be able to pinpoint your specific problems and mistakes, and you can focus on the techniques on which you want work.
The four main subjects are:
  • • The three basic principles (to ensure healthy sound production)
  • • The four vocal modes (to choose the ‘gear’ you want to sing in)
  • • Sound colours (to make the sound lighter or darker)
  • • Effects (to achieve specific sound effects)
